TEA Guidance Regarding the Home Language Survey
Responses on the Home Language Survey trigger the identification process for potential English Learner Students. It is the very important first step in identifying an English Learner and the original HLS must be maintained in the permanent record file of all Texas Students. Can parents make a change to the HLS?
Yes, but there are guidelines to follow! Use the attached guide to ensure that a change to an HLS meets state guidelines including: Request to change must be received in writing within 2 calendar weeks and prior to the administration of the identification assessment.
Guidelines for Obtaining Parent Permission by Phone
Parent approval for initial program placement or reclassification of a student may be obtained via a phone conversation.
Parent Permission Timeline
Parent Permission can be obtained by phone, so the goal is to receive that within 48 hours of completion of he LPAC.
